If you have been referred for an MRI and feel concerned about being in an enclosed space, you are not alone. Some patients experience discomfort or anxiety during conventional MRI examinations.
We’re proud to announce the new Open MRI at Lumus Imaging Robina Home Hub
Open MRI provides a more spacious scanning environment with increased visibility and open sides. It’s suitable for those who are claustrophobic, offering an alternative for patients who may feel confined in a conventional MRI.
Our new Open MRI is an important addition for the Gold Coast
With the addition of Open MRI at Robina Home Hub, people across QLD now have another option if a conventional MRI feels too enclosed. For patients who experience claustrophobia, anxiety, or prefer a more open environment, an open MRI offers a more comfortable alternative.
What Is Open MRI?
An Open MRI differs from a traditional enclosed MRI. Instead of a narrow tunnel design, it provides open sides and greater visibility, which may help reduce feelings of confinement.
It’s especially relevant for people who may feel claustrophobic or for larger patients who may benefit from the additional space. For general information about how MRI technology works, you may also visit InsideRadiology, an Australian resource developed by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR).
Who Might Benefit from Open MRI?
An Open MRI may be suitable for patients who:
- Experience claustrophobia
- Feel anxious in enclosed environments
- Require additional space for comfort or positioning
- Have mobility limitations
- Prefer greater visibility during scanning
Your referring doctor will determine whether Open MRI is appropriate for your clinical needs. In some cases, a conventional MRI may still be recommended depending on the type of examination required. For more information about MRI suitability and safety, RANZCR provides general guidance on medical imaging standards in Australia.
What Happens During an Open MRI?
An Open MRI scan is a non-invasive procedure that uses strong magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the body. It does not use ionising radiation.
During your appointment:
- You will lie on a scanning table.
- The table will move into position.
- You will hear noise from the scanner (ear protection is provided).
- A communication device will allow you to speak with the radiographer if needed.
Our team will explain each step before the scan begins and answer any questions you may have.
